How to Count Characters in Your Document
Each major writing application shows character count in a slightly different location. Supported applications include:
- Microsoft Word (Review → Word Count)
- Google Docs (Tools → Word count or Ctrl+Shift+C)
- LibreOffice Writer (Tools → Word Count)
Microsoft Word
Go to Review → Word Count. In the dialog box, look for Characters (with spaces). Divide by 1,800 for your standard page count.
Google Docs
Go to Tools → Word count or press Ctrl+Shift+C. The dialog shows characters with spaces — the value you need.
LibreOffice Writer
Go to Tools → Word Count. LibreOffice displays characters with and without spaces. Use the "with spaces" value.
